Condition
Stress Fractures
Bony stress reactions in the heel from repetitive overload or reduced bone density.
What It Is
Understanding Stress Fractures
Repetitive overload of bone without proper recovery, or in people with excessive body weight or with Osteopenia or Osteoporosis, can lead to bony stress reactions in the Calcaneus bone which causes heel pain. As with any fracture, increased heel pain and ache can be experienced in bed at night even when there is no weight-bearing.
As part of our screening exams, we use 2 very specific tests that can reliably predict whether or not a patient has a stress fracture, and we use that information to determine the proper treatment approach. Typically with a fracture, we would refer out to the appropriate Practitioner of record in the state of Florida. If it is determined to be a stress fracture and nothing more serious, we would begin Softwave — Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy because this advanced healing technology does in fact accelerate bone healing.
Symptoms
What You May Be Experiencing
- Heel pain that persists at rest, including at night
- Pain that worsens with weight-bearing and impact
- Localized tenderness over the heel bone
- Recent increase in training volume, walking, or impact loading
- History of low bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis)
The Problem
Why Traditional Treatments Often Fall Short
Stress fractures are often missed early because they don’t always show up on initial x-rays. Without an accurate diagnosis, patients are treated for plantar fasciitis or tendonitis, and the bone never gets the rest and healing support it needs.
Our Approach
How SoftWave® Helps Stress Fractures
Once a stress fracture is confirmed and any necessary referrals are made, SoftWave® shockwave therapy is used to accelerate bone healing. The same technology that helps soft tissue regenerate has documented effects on supporting bone repair.
FAQ
Stress Fractures — Common Questions
How do you know if I have a stress fracture?
We use 2 specific clinical tests as part of our screening exam that reliably predict the presence of a stress fracture and guide the next step.
Will I need a boot or crutches?
It depends on severity. We coordinate with the appropriate practitioner of record and individualize loading guidance.
Does SoftWave really help bones heal?
Yes — there is documented evidence that shockwave therapy accelerates bone healing, which is why we incorporate it into our stress fracture protocol.
