Condition
Pain in Balls of Feet
Aching, burning, or sharp pain in the forefoot — often called metatarsalgia.
What It Is
Understanding Pain in Balls of Feet
Foot pain under or between the toes is very common and can often be accompanied by aching and even numbness and tingling and is common with conditions called Metatarsalgia, Bursitis, and Morton’s Neuroma or other nerve compression issues. Sometimes people feel as though they lost the padding under their toes. The second toe joint is one of the most common sources of pain in the balls of the feet and it is typically due to excessive force and pressure and even instability of that joint. Pain in the toe joints can also be caused by Arthritis and tearing of the ligamentous structures under the toes. Very specific footwear that reduces forefoot load is often necessary and one of the most beneficial treatments to cut inflammation and help to regenerate the tissues is Softwave Tissue Regenerative Therapy or Shockwave Therapy.
Symptoms
What You May Be Experiencing
- Aching or burning pain under the ball of the foot
- Sharp pain with push-off when walking or running
- Feeling like there's a stone under the forefoot
- Pain that worsens with standing, walking, or high-impact activity
- Calluses under the metatarsal heads
The Problem
Why Traditional Treatments Often Fall Short
Metatarsal pads and cushioned inserts redistribute pressure but don’t address the inflamed and degenerative soft tissue underneath. Anti-inflammatories quiet symptoms briefly. Cortisone shots have a short window of relief and can accelerate tissue breakdown over time.
Our Approach
How SoftWave® Helps Pain in Balls of Feet
SoftWave® shockwave therapy targets the irritated tissues at the ball of the foot — the joint capsules, plantar plate, surrounding ligaments, and inflamed nerve tissue — stimulating a true healing response. Patients regain comfortable walking and standing without resorting to repeat injections or surgery.
FAQ
Bone Spurs — Common Questions
Is this the same as Morton's Neuroma?
They overlap and can coexist. Neuroma is specifically nerve irritation; metatarsalgia is broader and can involve joints, ligaments, fat pad, and nerve all at once.
Do I need orthotics?
Sometimes, as a short-term support. But the long-term goal is to heal the tissue so the foot can tolerate normal loading again.
How long until I feel relief?
Most patients notice meaningful change within the first few sessions, with continued improvement over the weeks after the series.
