Condition
Morton's Neuroma
Sharp, burning pain between the toes from an irritated forefoot nerve.
What It Is
Understanding Morton's Neuroma
Morton’s Neuroma is a fibrosis of the digital plantar nerves between the metatarsals of the foot. Neuromas may present as small masses or can just be affected by compression forces that squeeze the toes together as with narrow toe box shoes. Morton’s Neuromas are often seen as a complication of Big Toe Bunions because they can cause a shift in forefoot load and compression to the lesser toes. Conservative Morton’s Neuroma treatment such as Softwave Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is highly recommended and surgery should be reserved for extreme cases. People will often feel as if they are walking on a pebble or a bunched-up sock and in more advanced cases they can experience numbness or tingling in one or more toes.
Symptoms
What You May Be Experiencing
- Sharp or burning pain in the ball of the foot, often between the third and fourth toes
- Feeling of walking on a pebble or a wrinkled sock
- Numbness or tingling in the toes
- Pain that worsens in tight shoes or high heels
- Relief when removing shoes and massaging the foot
The Problem
Why Traditional Treatments Often Fall Short
Cortisone injections offer short-term relief but can weaken surrounding tissue and rarely solve the problem long-term. Surgical removal of the nerve creates permanent numbness and isn’t a guarantee against the pain returning. Padding and wider shoes reduce pressure but don’t heal the irritated nerve and tissue.
Our Approach
How SoftWave® Helps Morton's Neuroma
SoftWave® shockwave therapy reduces inflammation around the irritated nerve, improves circulation in the forefoot, and stimulates a regenerative response in the surrounding soft tissue. Most patients see meaningful drops in burning, sharpness, and the ‘pebble’ sensation without injections, surgery, or permanent numbness.
FAQ
Morton's Neuroma — Common Questions
Will I have to give up the shoes I love?
We’ll talk through footwear during treatment, but the goal is not lifelong avoidance — it’s getting the nerve healthy enough that normal footwear stops triggering symptoms.
Is SoftWave better than a cortisone shot?
It’s more durable. Shots calm symptoms; SoftWave addresses the underlying tissue irritation and stimulates healing.
How many sessions will I need?
Most Morton’s Neuroma patients respond well within a standard treatment series of 6–8 sessions.
