Condition
Achilles Tendinopathy
Pain, degeneration, and inflammation where the Achilles tendon meets the heel.
What It Is
Understanding Achilles Tendinopathy
The muscles of your calf merge into that really strong cord in the back of your ankle called the Achilles tendon, and this tendon attaches in several different areas of the heel bone, or Calcaneus. Sometimes the issue can be in the cord portion itself, but the cord has smaller soft tissue extensions that attach across the back of the heel and these attachments can pull away from the bone and cause inflammation, pain, and a degenerative process.
Some of the areas associated with this structure can be what we call hypovascular, which means inadequate blood supply and therefore oxygen deficient — so Softwave — Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy again comes to the rescue because it is famous for building new blood vessels and healing soft tissue. Stretching, strengthening, muscular endurance, body composition, and recovery strategies come after normal healing is underway.
Symptoms
What You May Be Experiencing
- Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon, especially in the morning
- Tenderness at the back of the heel
- Swelling or thickening of the tendon
- Pain that worsens with activity or after exercise
- Reduced strength when pushing off the foot
The Problem
Why Traditional Treatments Often Fall Short
Cortisone shots are generally avoided around the Achilles because they can weaken the tendon and risk rupture. NSAIDs and rest may reduce flare-ups, but they don’t restore the degenerated tendon fibers or improve blood supply to the hypovascular zones.
Our Approach
How SoftWave® Helps Achilles Tendinopathy
SoftWave® shockwave therapy stimulates new blood vessel formation in the oxygen-starved areas of the Achilles, triggers a true regenerative healing response in the damaged tendon, and prepares the tissue for loading. Once healing is underway we layer in stretching, strengthening, and endurance work for long-term resilience.
FAQ
Achilles Tendinopathy — Common Questions
Can I keep running or working out during treatment?
We typically modify, not stop, activity. Heavy impact is reduced for short windows around sessions while the tendon heals.
Why are cortisone shots discouraged for the Achilles?
They can weaken the tendon and increase the risk of rupture, which is why SoftWave is a much safer regenerative option.
How long until I'm back to full sport?
Most patients feel meaningful change inside the treatment series, with progressive return to full sport over the following weeks as loading is reintroduced.
